Fruits in my fruit bowl tend to rot into a mulchy mess after a couple of weeks. Fruits that are chilled in permanent Siberian ice fare rather better. After more than 30,000 years, and some care from Russian scientists, some ancient fruits have produced this delicate white flower. These regenerated plants, rising like wintry Phoenixes from the Russian ice, are still viable. They produce their own seeds and, after a 30,000-year hiatus, can continue their family line. The plant owes its miraculous resurrection to a team of scientists led by David Gilichinsky, and an enterprising ground squirrel. Back in the...

MOSCOW (AP) -- It was an Ice Age squirrel's treasure chamber, a burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years. From the fruit tissues, a team of Russian scientists managed to resurrect an entire plant in a pioneering experiment that paves the way for the revival of other species. The Silene stenophylla is the oldest plant ever to be regenerated, the researchers said, and it is fertile, producing white flowers and viable seeds. The experiment proves that permafrost serves as a natural depository for ancient life forms, said the Russian researchers,...

Got out for a while, but I'm just going to have to accept that I can't take the heat anymore. 5 minutes in the Sun and I start getting light headed The tomcat is Loki, he is very gentle but on the wild side. It's taken him 3 years to fully trust me. He weighs at least 20 pounds, not too much fat. He just showed up one day skinny and hungry. He flinched any time you moved your hands.

When I bought my Sony DSLR I hung on to my Panasonic FZ30 and my old Olympus c2100. Sometimes I want to travel light and there are situations where the smaller camera gets results with less effort. The rose is from the Panasonic, amaryllis fron the Sony.I'm on my second FZ30 I ran the first one until it stopped, lots of shots.

We're in a transitional period, the birds are nesting and hunting far and wide to find nest materials and food for hatched chicks. The flowers are just starting to really pop. This time of year the only big concentrations of wading birds are the rookery areas. They hunt far and wide when feeding chicks. This is a Tri colored Heron, an amaryllis and a really pretty multicolored rose.
Flower raises a stink in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE , Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A rare, large and foul-smelling plant in the lily family that blooms about every six years may stink up the Milwaukee Public Museum Jan. 18, authorities say. The corpse flower -- a tital arum (large lily), or Amorphophallus titanium (huge unshaped penis) -- normally grows wild in Indonesian rainforests. The schedule by which they flower is unpredictable, and once they do so, it is only for 24 to 48 hours, says a notice on the Web site of San Francisco State University. In 2008 when the museum's other corpse flower bloomed, it gave off...

Maria Sanchez Lake is almost downtown St. Augustine, a residential area with older homes. The lake is a bird magnet and there are often some nice flowers in yards around the lake. If you don't see any birds near the water look up in the Oak trees. This Great Egret and the White Ibis were waiting for the tide to start in. This flower is a Lycoris, it was almost hidden by someone's garbage can.

I timed it right, the pond crew started showing up about the same time I did. The season change is bringing in a lot of new birds, the Boat Tail Grackles were back in the marsh today. The double Hibiscus was growing in a yard close to the street. |

LONG DAY FOR AN OLD MAN

St. Augustine High School hosted a regional JROTC drill competition today. Grandson Gerry rolled me out of the sack at 6AM and off we went. Why we had to leave so early is beyond me, nothing started until about 9AM, but since the army was running things you just got to follow orders! I couldn't get the right angle on the Sun but managed to catch some of the action. I headed out just after 10AM to chase some critters, Gerry was there for the day. I'm trying to calibrate a new monitor, some pics may be light or dark...
Desperate Help Needed - Re: Sunflower My Daughter Grew From Seed Destroyed By Neighbor Kids
Saturday 26th of May 2012 01:14:28 AM
Posted by admin / Under Flower Fairies
Please help me out! My daughter grew a massive sunflower from seed in a wildflower garden that we planted late this spring. This flower was MAGNIFICENT, it had eight blooms and 3 or 4 more on the way! Neighbor boys cut it down with a tent pole this morning and Bachman's has told us that it will likely die. We are in MN (twin cities area), so I'm trying to find somewhere, anywhere, that has sunflowers (mature ones preferably). Bachman's told us no dice - they don't have any. My 2.5 year old is going to be crushed, and Mom...

Tokyo fights burglars with flower power

TOKYO (Reuters) A Tokyo district plagued with burglaries has turned to planting flowers to beautify its streets and help stamp out crime. "'Operation Flower' began about three years ago. By planting flowers facing the street, more people will be keeping an eye out while taking care of the flowers or watering them," said Kiyotaka Ohyagi, a Suginami City official. "The best way to prevent crime is to have more people on the lookout." Suginami, with a population of 528,800, saw a record 1,710 break-ins in 2002. When a neighbourhood watch group found that there were fewer burglaries in buildings...
